My Take on the Paleo Diet

So this post is going to be a little bit like my other posts, only instead of reviewing a product I’m going to share my honest thoughts on the paleo diet itself.¬†First let me say that I do enjoy the paleo diet– I’ve seen great results and I think it’s a great concept. Really, the bottom line is that it’s effective, and that’s all that really matters. But, I can still vent a little bit– what else is the internet good for? After sticking to the paleo diet and trying various paleo meals, I’m going to share a few things that have been on my mind, good and bad. Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Good answer, I’ll share the bad news first.

The bad

The food limitations are the biggest negative of the paleo diet. Granted, any diet would come with restrictions– that’s the whole point. But I love dairy. I mean if I could eat cheese on everything, I would. And unfortunately, cheese didn’t come around until (probably) the Roman empire. Cavemen didn’t eat it, so neither can I. That was the hardest thing to cut back on.

Second, when you follow the paleo diet you tend to eat way too many meats. Yes, the paleo diet stresses eating meat. The paleo menu is full of meats, but that doesn’t mean that’s all you should eat. It is possible to make a vegetarian paleo dinner, you know. Also, fish and chicken are important– whether or not you consider those to be “real meat” is up to you. Most paleo athletes eat some carbs to balance the meats they take in, which actually is a good model to follow. Carbs are good, just not in excess.

The good

The results. As I mentioned above, the results are good if you stick to the diet. Weight goes down, blood pressure goes down, everyone is happy. You can eat plenty of meat, vegetables, and fruits and feel like a million bucks. Seriously, I feel like my mood gets better when I eat healthy.

So there you have it, the bottom line is that as long as you can handle giving up dairy, booze, and grains (some grains are ok here and there) the paleo diet should be a piece of cake. Unfortunately for some of us, it’s not that easy. But I will say, having the right paleo cookbook helps a ton. Get a good paleo cookbook and it’ll make you miss those pieces of cheese a little bit less.
